a statement on AI use

No book by me, Kim Deister, from concept to research to edit to design, was, or ever will be, created with the use of generative AI.

I do not use AI (Artificial Intelligence) for any part of the creative process. From concept to research to edit to design to advertising, no generative AI is used. The content of all books is human-created from the first idea to the outlining and writing. Only human editors are used, and human designers for any associated art and marketing, without the use of AI assistance. This will not change.

In fact, my books have been stolen in order to both “train” AI programs and to generate content, including AI book writing/generation program. Therefore, any resemblance of other works to the content of my writing is because of this theft. These programs upload books, copy them, and use the work to create generative books.

Unfortunately, due to the requirements of some companies/retailers that force authors to consent to AI use through the acceptance of their terms and conditions in order to sell books on their platforms, I am not able to opt out of all AI programs. However, I am fully committed and morally bound to avoiding generative AI as much as is possible within the industry. I am also willing to correct any issues that may arise through third-party use in the form of those I hire who use AI without my knowledge or consent.

A couple personal notes…

On a personal level, I abhor AI as a part of any creative process. Not only is it using stolen works as the foundation of its generative process, it is completely devoid of human creativity. It is also so detrimental to both humanity and the planet we live on.

AI-use accusations can be extremely detrimental to authors, and they should be avoided without definitive evidence and/or proof. I am not alone in the theft of my work. Thousands of authors and other artists have had their hard work stolen and uploaded to be used in these AI programs. Because of that, it is possible that our work may appear to mimic AI, when the truth is… AI is mimicking them instead. A false accusation of AI use can destroy an author’s career.
