I’ve been reading these books virtually nonstop for the last 27 years. Yes, you read that right. And, yes, I am old. Okay, not that old. But I digress. At any given point, I might be reading other books, but there is always one of these that I am also reading.
The Valdemar world was created by the fabulous Mercedes Lackey, the first book published in 1987. High fantasy novels, they are timeless, and more books are still being added to the epic saga that is this world. The books have been published out of order of the timeline of the world itself, so I read them in the world’s order, rather than release date. And that is an undertaking, believe me.
It’s more than a series; it is bunches of series, duologies, singles, anthology shorts. Currently, there are twelve installments within the timeline, some of them single books, some series ranging up to five books. Altogether, there are 34 books, 14 anthologies of countless stories, and one companion book that contains even more stories. And I’ve read all of them except for one book and one anthology that came out earlier this year but fall into the timeline at points I’d already passed. I have 10 more books to go before I start over yet again!
I don’t know what it is about these books that have made them so much a part of me, but they are. It really isn’t any one thing. It’s the characters, how diverse and different they are. It’s the age-old theme of good versus evil. It’s the settings, the rich world she creates. It’s the ups and downs of emotions, the struggles. It’s so many things. Mercedes Lackey is my author hero!
