That’s right… today is National Coffee Day! Anyone who knows me knows the love affair I have with my coffee! So, in honor of coffee… here’s a list of fun and interesting facts!!

  1. Did you know that coffee beans are actually berry pits? Seeds, not beans!
  2. Only two states in the US actually grow and produce coffee, California and Hawaii. There are two coffee farms within a few miles of my house in Hawaii!
  3. The world’s most expensive coffee can cost up to $600 a pound, Kopi Luwak.
  4. Side note: It involves the poop of Asian palm civets, a cat-like mammal that is adorable. They eat the coffee cherries, and the pit is harvested from their… leavings.
  5. As of May of this year, the Finnish drink the most coffee, an average of 26.5 pounds a year. Despite my best effort, the US isn’t even in the top 10.
  6. Calorie counters… plain black coffee has ONE calorie.
  7. Coffee grounds make an awesome DIY scrub. I use it all the time!
  8. Coffee can be lethal. Of course, it would take roughly 100 cups in a short amount of time. Even I’m nowhere near that!
  9. Rumor has it Voltaire, the French philosopher, drank 50 cups a day. That’s a commitment.
  10. Despite what everyone thinks, coffee does jack to change your BAC. If you’re drunk, you’re drunk! It just helps you seem more alert.
  11. Coffee has helped the advancement of technology. The first webcam was developed by Cambridge University… to see the level of coffee at the communal coffee pot. I support this.
  12. There is a spa in Japan that lets you soak in pools of coffee. There are also pools of wine and ramen.
  13. Chock Full O’Nuts coffee? No nuts involved. It’s named after a chain of nut stores the found turned into coffee shops.
  14. There’s a Starbucks at the CIA in Langley, Virginia.
  15. Once again, coffee fuels technology. Literally. Scientists have turned ground coffee into biodiesl fuel.
