That’s right… today is National Coffee Day! Anyone who knows me knows the love affair I have with my coffee! So, in honor of coffee… here’s a list of fun and interesting facts!!
- Did you know that coffee beans are actually berry pits? Seeds, not beans!
- Only two states in the US actually grow and produce coffee, California and Hawaii. There are two coffee farms within a few miles of my house in Hawaii!
- The world’s most expensive coffee can cost up to $600 a pound, Kopi Luwak.
- Side note: It involves the poop of Asian palm civets, a cat-like mammal that is adorable. They eat the coffee cherries, and the pit is harvested from their… leavings.
- As of May of this year, the Finnish drink the most coffee, an average of 26.5 pounds a year. Despite my best effort, the US isn’t even in the top 10.
- Calorie counters… plain black coffee has ONE calorie.
- Coffee grounds make an awesome DIY scrub. I use it all the time!
- Coffee can be lethal. Of course, it would take roughly 100 cups in a short amount of time. Even I’m nowhere near that!
- Rumor has it Voltaire, the French philosopher, drank 50 cups a day. That’s a commitment.
- Despite what everyone thinks, coffee does jack to change your BAC. If you’re drunk, you’re drunk! It just helps you seem more alert.
- Coffee has helped the advancement of technology. The first webcam was developed by Cambridge University… to see the level of coffee at the communal coffee pot. I support this.
- There is a spa in Japan that lets you soak in pools of coffee. There are also pools of wine and ramen.
- Chock Full O’Nuts coffee? No nuts involved. It’s named after a chain of nut stores the found turned into coffee shops.
- There’s a Starbucks at the CIA in Langley, Virginia.
- Once again, coffee fuels technology. Literally. Scientists have turned ground coffee into biodiesl fuel.
