One of the first things I do when I go to a new place is find a great bookstore, the more unique the better. Some of these I’ve been to, and the others are on my bookish wish list!
bookstore: Bart’s Books
location: Ojai, California
website
This is one of my favorites that I discovered when I lived in California. The building is a 1930s-era cottage, but the bookshelves overflow into the courtyard surrounding the cottage. The outdoor shelves are housed in street-vender style stalls. It’s so fun!
bookstore: Talk Story Bookstore
location: Hanapepe, HI (Kaua’i)
website
This is on my bookish bucket list, since it’ll take a plane ride to island-hop to it! Here in Hawai’i, talking story is local speak for chit-chatting. That’s the kind of place this bookstore is. And it’s more than books.. collectibles, music, Hawaiiana.
bookstore: Book and Bed
location(s): Tokyo and Osaka, Japan
website
This is 100% on my book travel wish list! It’s a bookstore and a hostel with capsule-style lodging. There are oodles of books, eateries, even napping spots. So unique!
bookstore: The Book Barge
location: Burgundy, France
website
It’s exactly what it sounds like, a floating bookstore that is by appointent only. The owner will curate a customized collection of reads for customers.
